SALT LAKE CITY — Tim Meyers had been playing electronic music for a few years along with a host of other genres, but it wasn’t until he was asked to score a film that he began his most recent electronic project, Famous Relatives.

Music has always been a large part of Meyers' life, with his grandparents both playing instruments and his parents always encouraging him to make music. He said it was something he had always kind of been drawn to as a kid, and always something that has been a part of him.

Both his older brother and sister played guitar and bass, and through that he was able to learn how to play himself.

“I kind of snuck into their room and played their instruments while they were gone,” Meyers said. “So that’s kind of how I learned to play those instruments.”

At the age of 12, Meyers went from just liking music to developing his own taste and really playing music he loved.

From there he has played in numerous bands around Salt Lake. From punk and metal to synth-pop, he is constantly playing music of different genres, something that has become a definitive trait for him.

“To be honest I just write the music that I want to,” Meyers said. “I hoped to never limit myself to one type of genre.”

Along with Famous Relatives, Meyers currently plays in the lo-fi experimental rock duo, Palace of Buddies, with Nicholas Foster. Together they have written and recorded two albums, and gone on a handful of tours. This remains Meyers' main project, and the two are in the process of recording a new album now.

“It’s been really kind of refreshing,” Meyers said. “Palace of Buddies is quite a bit different than what I’ve been doing with Famous Relatives.”

But the writing and recording for Palace of Buddies hasn’t slowed Meyers down on his Famous Relatives new album, which he has been primarily writing on his commute to Park City every day.

“It’s great because I have got this time where I can shut everything else out and focus primarily on the music,” Meyers said. “It’s definitely inspiring. It’s kind of my sacred time every day, I guess.”

Meyers is currently around 70 percent finished with recording the album. Because he is recording in both groups, neither is playing any upcoming shows. Look for both bands' new albums soon, and in the meantime you can listen to the Famous Relatives first album on bandcamp.com.
