CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has signed a bill aimed at educating the public about domestic violence protection. The bill allows Nevada's health and human services department to create an educational program focused on preventing domestic violence. It's part of a state Democratic legislative agenda called the "Nevada Blueprint." The measure doesn't allocate any money to the proposed program but allows it to apply for grants and gifts.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada Senate committee has passed a proposal to make several expiring taxes permanent and raise the cigarette tax. The bill would make temporary rates on the payroll tax and sales tax permanent. An amendment to the bill also raises taxes on cigarettes from 80 cents to $1.80 per pack. Democrats questioned some of the extensions, and said the cigarette tax rate might be too aggressive.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada Assembly committee has passed a bill requiring laboratories to put dogs and cats up for adoption when they're done performing research on them. The bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Mark Manendo requires labs to offer animals up for adoption before euthanizing them as long as they are healthy enough to go to a new home. The bill now heads to a vote of the full Assembly.
NEW YORK (AP) — Floyd Mayweather says in an upcoming interview with Showtime that at this moment he's not interested in a rematch with Manny Pacquiao. The interview will air tomorrow after the network's replay of boxing's richest fight, which Mayweather won by decision last weekend in Las Vegas to stay undefeated.
