HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — More than 30 lawsuits have been filed against Metro-North Railroad over the May 2013 derailment in Bridgeport, Connecticut, than left more than 70 people injured when two commuter trains going in opposite directions collided.
Passengers and crew have until May 17, the two-year anniversary of the accident, to bring legal action.
The Hartford Courant reports (http://cour.at/1Ij3LZp ) five lawsuits have been filed in the past week, all alleging that Metro-North's negligence in failing to properly maintain the tracks led to the derailment.
Investigators concluded the derailment was the result of a cracked joint bar, used to join two sections of rail. They said the problem may not have been visible from a vehicle used to inspect the tracks just two days before the accident.
Metro-North has declined to comment on the lawsuits.
