ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A panel of state lawmakers is headed to western New York to discuss the problems posed by addiction to heroin and other opiates.

The Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction is scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon at Niagara University.

The panel is holding hearings around the state as it studies the problems associated with heroin addiction as well as the effectiveness of programs designed to combat the drug.

Thursday's hearing is expected to feature remarks from local police and prosecutors, public health experts and parents whose children have struggled with addiction.

The panel plans to submit its findings and recommendations to the entire Legislature for consideration.
