PHOENIX (AP) — The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee says evidence does not indicate that a weekend shooting in Garland, Texas was directed by the Islamic State group, "but rather inspired by them." Congressman Michael McCaul says a Twitter account linked to one of the gunmen included images of Anwar Awlaki, a radical cleric killed in a CIA drone strike in Yemen. Both gunmen were shot dead in the Sunday attack outside a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Attorney General Loretta Lynch is promising to improve Baltimore's police department. Lynch met with the family of a man who was fatally injured while in police custody. She said in a meeting with faith and community leaders, "We're here to hold your hands and provide support." The FBI and the Justice Department are investigating the death of Freddie Gray for potential civil rights violations.
NEW YORK (AP) — State Island District Attorney Dan Donovan has won a special election to fill a New York City congressional seat that became vacant when the Republican incumbent pleaded guilty to tax fraud. Donovan came to national attention last year when a Staten Island grand jury he empaneled decided not to charge a white police officer in the videotaped chokehold death of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man.
HOPE, Ark. (AP) — Conservative Mike Huckabee is making a second bid for the White House. The former Arkansas governor declared his presidential candidacy today, becoming the sixth notable Republican to enter the campaign. Huckabee told supporters in his hometown of Hope, Arkansas, that "Power, money and political influence have left a lot of Americans behind." Huckabee also pledged the elimination of the IRS, what he calls "the biggest bully in America."
NEW YORK (AP) — A painting by Vincent van Gogh has sold for way more than the resale estimate at a Sotheby's auction in New York. The painting ("The Allee of Alyscamps") van Gogh created while briefly working side by side with his friend Paul Gauguin, was expected to sell for $40 million. It was purchased by an Asian private collector for $66.3 million. Today's sale also included six paintings by Claude Monet, and the highlight was his "Water Lillies," which sold for $54 million.
