OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A man who abandoned a litter of puppies has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges.
Michael Ray Howard pleaded to 13 counts of Class A misdemeanor cruelty, one count each for the puppies that died when he placed them in a garbage bag. He also pleaded guilty to one Class B misdemeanor count of cruelty for the only puppy that survived.
Howard is scheduled for sentencing July 7. He faces up to a year in jail on the Class A charges and six months for the Class B misdemeanor.
Police say Howard told them he wasn't able to care for the terrier-mix puppies and intended to suffocate them by leaving them in the plastic bag over night on Dec. 8. A worker at a fabric store found the bag the next day with one puppy still alive inside.
