LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police say an Atlanta-area sheriff shot and critically wounded a woman in a subdivision near the Atlanta suburb of Lawrenceville.

Gwinnett County police say officers found the woman shot in the abdomen Sunday evening. Police say she was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said the shooter was identified as Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, who they say refused to speak with investigators and was released with no charges.

Gwinnett County police said in a statement the shooting was "reported as accidental" but didn't elaborate on who reported it that way.

In 2012, Hill was elected sheriff despite being under indictment on felony corruption charges. A jury later acquitted him of the 27 felony charges.

Two lawyers who represented Hill in that case didn't immediately respond to phone messages and emails early Monday.
