SAN DIEGO (AP) — A prolific California condor that represented endangered wildlife on a 1996 postage stamp has been euthanized after months of treatment for cancer.
The U-T San Diego newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1Qfg2zg) Almiyi was hatched in captivity in 1983 as part of a program intended to save her species from extinction. She was taken to San Diego Zoo Safari Park, paired with two males and eventually became mom to 38 chicks.
More than two dozen of those chicks were released into the wild, and the rest can be found at the World Center for Birds in Boise, Idaho, and the Oregon Zoo and Safari Park.
Almiyi was euthanized after undergoing four months of cancer treatment. Safari Park officials say she was one of the state's most prolific condors.
