SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Some professors say they are upset to learn that Utah Valley University President Matthew Holland signed his name to an amicus brief before the U.S. Supreme Court opposing gay marriage. KUTV reports that dozens of current and former UVU faculty and staff argued in a letter published Friday in the Salt Lake Tribune that Holland's decision goes against the university's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (AP) — Police say a homeowner shot and killed a man accused of trying to break into his home in Pleasant Grove. Officers say Christian Chichia pounded on the front door of the house at 5:30 a.m. yesterday, awakening the homeowner and his wife. Chichia then climbed to a second-floor balcony and tried to enter through a door. Police say the homeowner unlocked the door to talk to the man, but shot him when Chichia tried to force his way into the house.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police are looking for suspects in the theft of two historical bronze plaques from a Salt Lake City park. Investigators say the plaques were removed from a monument at Warm Springs Park late last week. Detectives are seeking the public's immediate help, saying they fear the plaques will be melted down for money.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Elko County's lawyers head back to federal court today with century-old newspaper clippings and mining claim maps from the 1890s that they say prove they're in charge of a road on a national forest. The county, U.S. government and environmentalists have been arguing for two decades over the South Canyon Road and protection of a threatened fish in the river next to it.
