GARLAND, Texas (AP) — Police in Garland, Texas say no credible threat was made before two gunmen opened fire outside an event in which participants drew cartoon depictions of the Prophet Muhammed. The gunmen shot and wounded a security officer and police then shot and killed the gunmen. Police also searched the gunmen's vehicle, fearing there could be explosives inside. Police say the gunmen have not been identified.
BALTIMORE (AP) — A state of emergency is expected to remain in effect over the next two days in Baltimore, which was the scene a week ago of rioting and looting. The mayor yesterday lifted a city-wide curfew that was in effect for five nights. Meanwhile, a preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 27 for the six police officers involved in the arrest of 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died of a broken neck while in police custody.
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — An Atlanta-area sheriff is accused of shooting a woman who's in critical condition. Police in Gwinnett County say the woman was shot in the abdomen last night. The shooter is identified as Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill, who was elected sheriff in 2012 despite being under indictment on felony corruption charges. A jury later acquitted him. Police say the shooting was reported "as accidental."
HAT YAI, Thailand (AP) — Authorities in Thailand have arrested three local officials they allege were involved in trafficking and holding Rohingya (ROH'-hin-GAH') Muslims for ransom at a jungle camp where 26 bodies were found last week in the mountains of southern Thailand. Police say the suspects are two deputy village chiefs and a municipal councilor, and they're believed to be part of a "transnational crime network" that included people from Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia and had been operating for three or four years.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The aging Riviera Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip will be closing its doors this afternoon. The 60-year-old building was sold to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority in February. The publicly-funded tourism agency plans to tear down the casino-hotel where Liberace and Frank Sinatra were once headliners and expand the Las Vegas Convention Center to the Strip. Furniture and fixtures inside the casino-hotel are expected to be auctioned later this month.
