PAUWATHOK, Nepal (AP) — The global effort to help Nepal after its devastating earthquake a week ago is continuing. But U.N. humanitarian officials say more helicopters are needed to reach isolated mountain villages. The officials say they're increasingly worried about the spread of disease. Nepal has been shaken by more than 70 aftershocks, and its people remain on edge.
NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York City say an on-duty officer has been shot and officers are flooding the area. Authorities haven't released the officer's condition. He's been taken to hospital in Queens. The shooting was reported at 6:15 p.m. in the Queens Village neighborhood. Local media reports officers are searching house by house in backyards and under cars with flashlights.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore's police commissioner says he's confident the truth will come out in the Freddie Gray case. A rally at City Hall today drew thousands of protesters who chanted "no justice, no peace, no racist police." It was billed as a "victory rally" after a prosecutor charged six officers with felonies in connection with the death of Gray, who suffered a spinal injury in police custody.
DETROIT (AP) — U.S. safety regulators are rejecting a Rhode Island man's request for an investigation into low-speed unintended acceleration problems with Toyota Corolla compact cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it put over 2,000 miles on the man's 2010 Corolla. But the agency's Ohio test lab couldn't find any problems with the throttle or transmission.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A record crowd turned out today to watch American Pharoah win the 141st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The winning time was 2:03.02 for the 1 1/4 miles. The largest Derby crowd ever — 170,513 — looked on under sunny skies. Jockey Victor Espinoza captured his second straight Derby win. Firing Line finished second and Dortmund was third.
