Protests continue in Baltimore...Police officer shot in NYC... Armed shopper kills carjacking suspect

BALTIMORE (AP) — It's another day of protests in Baltimore. More than 1,000 marchers arrived late this afternoon at the scene of Monday's looting and rioting after the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died after being seriously injured while in police custody last month. Most have gone home. Earlier, there was a large demonstration at City Hall.

NEW YORK (AP) — Police in New York City say an officer has been shot and rushed to a hospital. The officer's condition is not known. A spokesman for the New York Fire Department says the shooting was reported at 6:15 this evening in the Queens Village neighborhood.

OREM, Utah (AP) — Police say a shopper with a concealed weapons permit fatally shot a suspect to thwart a carjacking today outside a grocery store in Orem, Utah. Investigators say the 31-year-old male shooter heard a woman's screams as she was being pulled from her SUV by a 27-year-old male. The shooter says he went to help and fired after the suspect lunged at him in an attempt to grab his gun.

ROME (AP) — Ships from Italy and France are continuing to carry out sea rescues of people who are fleeing conflict zones and trying to get to Europe. More than 1,400 migrants were rescued today in the Mediterranean near Libya. The Italian coast guard carried out the bulk of the rescues but France says one of its patrol boats rescued 217 migrants and detained two suspected smugglers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — American Pharoah is the winner of the 141st Kentucky Derby before a record-setting crowd at Churchill Downs. Victor Espinoza was aboard for his second straight Derby win, and third overall. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert got his fourth Derby win, and also sent out third-place finisher Dortmund. Firing Line came in second.
