NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Runners and bicyclists are gathering in Newtown for what organizers are calling a "wingathlon" to benefit the foundation set up by the family of one of the 20 children killed in the Sandy Hook massacre.
Six-year-old Dylan Hockley was autistic and the Hockley family's Wing of Hope Foundation provides technology and supports sports and arts programs for children with autism.
Saturday's event on the campus of the former Fairfield Hills psychiatric hospital includes a 5K run/walk, and a duathalon that includes a 24k bicycle ride sandwiched between two 5K runs.
The "wingathlon" is a reference to Dylan's love of butterflies.
