METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints have selected Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson with their first of two third-round draft choices, giving the franchise a potential heir apparent to 36-year-old record-setting quarterback Drew Brees.
Barring an injury to Brees, Grayson isn't likely to play anytime soon. Brees, who tied for the NFL lead in yards passing last season, has two years remaining on his current contract and has expressed interest in an extension.
Last season, Grayson started 13 games for CSU, completing more than 64 percent of his passes for a school-record 4,006 yards and 32 touchdowns against seven interceptions.
The 6-foot-2, 213-pound Grayson was taken with the 75th overall pick, marking the first time the Saints have drafted a quarterback that high since taking Archie Manning second overall in 1971.
