HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A student at a Mississippi elementary school has been charged with a felony after bringing a BB gun and a pocket knife to class.
WDAM-TV (http://bit.ly/1Pcs7Ts ) reports a teacher noticed a sixth-grade student at Woodley Elementary School in Hattiesburg was showing the gun to other students Tuesday. The teacher called in school resource officers and the student was taken to a juvenile detention center.
School officials say parents have raised concerns about the weapons only being a BB gun and a pocket knife. The district has a zero tolerance policy about weapons on campus. Some parents were also concerned they weren't notified of the incident. The superintendent has apologized for the lack of communication.
The student has been charged with possession of a weapon and was removed from the school.
