NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — New London police have charged an 11-year-old boy in connection with the firing of a handgun in a middle school bathroom. No one was injured.

Police went to the boy's home Thursday and gave him a summons to appear in Juvenile Court. His name wasn't disclosed because of juvenile offender laws.

Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard says the boy brought an old revolver Wednesday to Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School and it discharged in a bathroom as he showed it to friends after school dismissed for the day.

Reichard says it's not clear why the gun fired. He says the boy didn't make any threats before the incident.

The boy is charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and other crimes. He has been suspended from school indefinitely.
