ADEN, Yemen (AP) — Yemeni military and security officials say a group of U.S. military forces, including Special Forces commandos, have evacuated an air base in Yemen after al-Qaida seized a nearby city. The officials say the troops are leaving the Al Anad air base near the southern city of al-Houta. They didn't say whether the troops have left the country. Some 100 American troops and Special Forces commandos believed to be stationed there.

NEW YORK (AP) — A hotplate left on for the Sabbath is suspected of starting a fire that killed seven members of an Orthodox Jewish family in their New York City home. The fire commissioner says the victims were three girls, ages 8, 12, 15, and four boys, ages 5, 6, 7 and 11. A teenage girl and a woman who is believed to be the mother of all eight children are in critical condition with burns and smoke inhalation.

LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — Two New Jersey police officers injured in a wrong-way crash in New York City that killed another officer and an acquaintance remain hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities say the four men were headed home from a strip club early yesterday when their car drove the wrong way down the highway and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer. The officers were off-duty at the time. Investigators have applied for a warrant to test the driver's blood-alcohol level.

KENNER, La. (AP) — The New Orleans airport says operations are back to normal, a day after a machete-wielding man was shot by a sheriff's lieutenant. Authorities say 62-year-old Richard White of Kenner approached a security checkpoint, where he sprayed agents and travelers with bug spray before drawing a machete from his waistband and chasing a security agent. He's in serious condition after being shot three times by a sheriff's office lieutenant who was stationed at the checkpoint.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — President Barack Obama is cheering on his niece at the NCAA tournament game between Princeton University and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. His niece, Leslie Robinson, plays forward for the undefeated Princeton team. She is the daughter of Michelle Obama's brother, Craig Robinson. The first-round NCAA tournament game is being played in College Park, Maryland.
