Suburban Richmond pupil wins regional Va. Spelling Bee

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A suburban Richmond sixth grader is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Tejas Muthusamy repeated as champ in the 41st Richmond Times-Dispatch regional Spelling Bee. He beat out champions representing 30 central Virginia school divisions.

Tejas won by correctly spelling the word "redox" in the 14th round. Merriam-Webster defines the word as "of or relating to oxidation-reduction."

The national Spelling Bee will be held May 24-29 in Washington.
