Gene Kennedy reporting A three car accident involving a cement tanker brought traffic on I-15 near Sandy to a snail's pace this morning.
The highway patrol and UDOT have spent several hours cleaning it up.
The accident happened around 9:15 this morning near 8600 South. UHP says a Jeep came into the tanker's lane and hit the semi's right, front wheel. The semi swerved and its trailers disconnected, hitting a Buick which was in the HOV lane.
The driver of the Buick is okay.
Ray Walker, Buick Driver: "All of the sudden, it was coming against me. Apparently the driver had swerved to miss something. I was on the brakes, moving to the left. He eventually crushed me into the wall. Then the trailer tipped all the way over."
The accident could have been much worse. UHP says everyone walked away with minor injuries. Only one man was taken to the hospital and he is in good condition.
Also amazing is the fact that the tanker didn't spill powdered cement all over the freeway. The tanker's load was 43,000 pounds of powdered cement. That made it difficult to get the trailers upright, but the clean up crews have succeeded in doing that.
