SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A convicted murderer in Utah says he wants to be sentenced in absentia 'out of respect' for the teenage victim he shot in the back of the head execution-style in 2012. But the family of 16-year-old victim Kenyatta Winston opposes the request, saying they want Frank Reyos in the courtroom to hear how his crime affected them when he's sentenced.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 24-year-old man has died after being found with a gunshot wound in a Salt Lake City street. Investigators say a handgun was found next to the man Saturday night in the Sugar House neighborhood, but they're unsure whether he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot or not. The man's name was not immediately released.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah wildlife officials say the number of animals poached in the state has increased by more than 30 percent over the last two years. Authorities say nearly 1,300 animals were killed illegally last year. That number is expected to increase as officers find more kills from 2014. Officials say it's not clear why the number of poached animals went up, but it could be because more officers are on patrol.

BEAR RIVER CITY, Utah (AP) — A 21-year veteran of the Box Elder County Sheriff's Office has been selected as the new sheriff by the local Republican Party. The appointment of Kevin Potter will be forwarded to county commissioners, who are expected to ratify it. Potter will fill the vacancy created by the Jan. 6 death of Sheriff Lynn Yeates.
