Belichick is at a loss...Gordon to retire after this season

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says he doesn't know how footballs became deflated during the game that got his team to the Super Bowl. But he declined to get into specifics on accusations that his team cheated with underinflated footballs in its win against the Colts in the AFC championship game. The NFL is investigating.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon says he will retire as a full-time driver after the 2015 season. The 43-year-old Gordon is coming off one of his best seasons in years, winning four races in 2014, including the Brickyard 400. Gordon has 92 career Sprint Cup wins and championships in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Pedro Martinez's Hall of Fame plaque will have the cap of the Boston Red Sox and John Smoltz's will have the Atlanta Braves. The Hall of Fame said last week that Randy Johnson's plaque will have the cap of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tonight in the NBA, the L.A. Clippers can close to within six and a-half games of Pacific Division-leading Golden State when they take on Brooklyn. The Nets won for just the second time in 10 games last night, beating Sacramento 103-100 as Brook Lopez had 22 points and six blocks.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Steve Kerr of the Golden State Warriors will coach the Western Conference in the All-Star Game on Feb. 15, and Atlanta's Mike Budenholzer will coach the East. Both are coaching teams that are assured of having the best record in their conference through Feb. 1. Kerr has the Warriors off to the best start in franchise history at 34-6. Atlanta is second best at 35-8, currently riding a 14-game win streak.
