EL PASO, Texas (AP) — There has been another shooting incident to pierce the quiet of night near a large U.S. military base. Officials at nearby Fort Bliss say a gunman opened fire tonight at a veterans medical clinic in West Texas, killing a person. Authorities say the gunman also was killed. Investigators didn't say whether the gunman who sprayed bullets at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System clinic killed himself or was killed by someone else. The complex was locked down as authorities responded to the shooting.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The bottom line could be: take on the boss at your own peril. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity say two rank-and-file Republicans who voted against John Boehner's (BAY'-nur) re-election as House speaker have been removed from coveted positions on the House Rules Committee. The officials, who said they were not authorized to discuss the reassignments publicly, said that Florida Congressmen Daniel Webster and Rich Nugent are no longer part of the panel. The change in committee assignments could only have been made with Boehner's approval.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (bahn kee-moon) says the state of Palestine will join the International Criminal Court on April 1, a high-stakes move that will enable the Palestinians to pursue war-crimes charges against Israel. The Palestinians submitted the documents ratifying the Rome Statute that established the court last Friday. That was the last formal step to becoming a member of the world's permanent war crimes tribunal.
UNDATED (AP) — Much of the country is shoveling, sliding and shivering its way through a wave of frigid wintry air. The storm has snarled traffic and is threatening to bring wind chills down to single-digit levels in almost two-thirds of the country. Not even the Deep South is being spared the Arctic-type weather. More than 130 flights in and out of Chicago alone have been canceled and many school districts delayed or canceled classes.
DALLAS (AP) — This definitely wasn't lovelier the second time around. North Texas has been hit by not one, but two earthquakes, both measuring about 3.6 in magnitude. Authorities say no damage was done. The U.S. Geological Service plotted the epicenters of the two temblors to northeast Irving, a suburb of Dallas. Both could be felt throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
