(KSL News) -- Fire officials say a working smoke alarm saved the lives of a family in Roy.
The home, located near 4300 S. 2675 West, caught fire when a seven year old boy was playing with a lighter in a bedroom. Officials say the blanket caught fire and the boy tried to put the fire out by himself. Flames spread through the upper floor and attic.
Everyone was able to get out of the house safely.
Chief Jon Ritchie/Roy City Fire and Rescue: "Extremely lucky to get out of this alive. The very good thing about this if anything, and we can't emphasize this enough, and that is working use of smoke alarms. "
The fire was contained to the upper floor. Crews estimate the damage at around $50 thousand.
The boy who started the fire had first degree burns on his leg and hand. No one else was injured.
