FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — A high school that often lags behind its counterparts in Fairfax County is posting some big gains.

The Washington Post (http://wapo.st/1wYiMHP ) reports Falls Church High School saw its average composite SAT score jump 35 points in 2014 compared with 2012. Dean of Students Colleen Lally says the number of students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses is also rising after a culture shift in the school.

The average SAT score increased from 1485 to 1520 this year. Falls Church students saw gains in reading and writing scores.

To emphasize a focus on college readiness, Lally says the school moved its college and career center right by the front doors so that it's the first thing students see every day.

More than half the school's students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.
