Tom Callan and AP reportingPerhaps he couldn't wait for his tax-rebate check.

Police say a 27-year-old Clearfield man stole a U.S. mail van that was parked but running Monday near a medical complex in Layton.

"I was asked yesterday if I'd ever heard of a mail truck being stolen, and I haven't around here. This is a first for me too," said Layton Sgt. Mark Chatlin.

The vehicle was recovered several hours later at Layton Hills Mall, where the suspect was caught inside the mall.

Chatlin says it appears that no mail is missing. Police don't know what the thief planned to do with a van that has just one seat and a steering wheel on the right side.
