Gene Kennedy reportingA Midvale man was nearly beaten to death overnight at his home. Police found him blocks away at a nearby apartment complex.

Now, investigators are trying to piece together what happened.

Beating Victim Found Outside Midvale Apartment

Attacked in his own home by someone with a board. Not an intruder, but possibly a relative.

Sgt. John Salazar / Midvale Police Dept: "They met either a cousin or a nephew at the house...maybe a family member, we don't know yet."

Gene Kennedy: "This is right across the street from you."

Liza Gonzales / Neighbor: "I know. That's what's so scary."

Gene Kennedy: "You didn't hear anything?"

Liza Gonzales: "No, we hardly ever see him."

It's unclear if any of the neighbors saw the man bleeding on the sidewalk, leaving his house disoriented around 1:30 this morning.

The victim either walked or crawled down Main Street to find help. Investigators think he was looking for the Midvale City Police Department, which is only a couple blocks away. But he went past it to the Midtown Villa apartments.

It's here, police say the victim knocked on an apartment door.

Sgt. John Salazar / Midvale Police Dept: "The gentleman who lives in the apartment does not know the victim. He called 911 and we responded."

In the darkened hallway, paramedics found the man lying in his own blood, a good two blocks from where he was attacked. Emergency crews took him to Cottonwood Hospital where detectives learned bits and pieces of his story, including this bizarre fact: The man's wife was at the home during the attack, but police can't find her.

Sgt. John Salazar / Midvale Police Dept: "We're not actively seeking her as a victim or suspect. We just need to fine her to talk with her."

And hopefully to get some answers to this mysterious and vicious attack.
