DALLAS (AP) — Health officials in Texas say about 80 people are being monitored for symptoms of Ebola. They are people who came in contact with the infected man, as well as their own contacts. A county health department spokeswoman says none of the people being monitored are showing symptoms. Health officials are focusing on containment in trying to stem the possibility of the Ebola virus spreading beyond the infected man, Thomas Duncan, who recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas.

HONG KONG (AP) — Midnight is approaching in Hong Kong -- and it's the deadline set by pro-democracy protesters for the territory's leader to resign. They've threatened to occupy government buildings, but Hong Kong police say that would lead to "serious consequences."

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are stabilizing a day after a plunge. They've been holding steady in early trading. Energy stocks are lower, after the price of crude oil fell.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of people collecting unemployment benefits is at its lowest level in more than eight years. New applications declined last week by 8,000, continuing a trend that began at the end of April. The government tomorrow releases its unemployment numbers for September.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — When midnight arrived, they were no longer firefighters. So two battalion chiefs in Atlantic City, New Jersey, had to walk off the job in the middle of fighting a blaze that destroyed four buildings Tuesday night. They had already turned in paperwork saying they would retire on October first. So when Tuesday became Wednesday, they had to leave the scene. The city's fire chief tells The Press of Atlantic City that all firefighters want to end their career doing their job.
