US stocks slip following drops overseas

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are closing slightly lower after recovering most of an early slide.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 41 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 17,071 Monday. The Dow had been down as much as 178 points earlier.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell five points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,977. The Nasdaq composite fell six points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,505.

Investors were nervous about the latest geopolitical unrest, this time in Hong Kong as police clashed with protestors demanding democratic reforms in the former British colony.

DreamWorks Animation soared 26 percent after media reports suggested the animation studio is in discussions with Japan's SoftBank about a possible deal.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.49 percent.
