CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire health officials say the state has confirmed its first two cases of an unusual respiratory illness in children.

Enterovirus D68 is causing the illness that has been found in about 39 other states.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said Friday that the virus has been confirmed in two children under the age of 15 in Hillsborough County.

The virus can cause mild to severe illness, with the worst cases needing life support for breathing difficulties. Kids with asthma have been especially vulnerable.

Officials say the two New Hampshire children were briefly hospitalized but since have been released.
