Tropical Storm Rachel swirls over Pacific

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Rachel is expected to pass between Socorro and Clarion islands as it moves over the Pacific off Mexico's coast.

The storm's maximum sustained winds early Friday are near 50 mph (85 kph). The U.S. National Hurricane Center says some strengthening is expected through Saturday but weakening is forecast to begin by Saturday night.

The tropical storm is centered about 390 miles (630 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and is moving west-northwest near 14 mph (22 kph).
