SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) — Colleges in Michigan and Ontario, Canada, are partnering to create an international public help program to train more employees for the growing field.

School and public health agency officials finalized the program Wednesday and Thursday at Algoma Public Health in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They say the program is eight years in the making and also includes Sault College in Ontario.

Sault College President Ron Common says the program will train students to be future public health inspectors and registered environmental health specialists. Canadian students will be able to obtain a bachelor of science degree in environmental health at LSSU, which was accredited by Canadian officials.

The program will accept its first students in September 2015.
