DIAMOND, W.Va. (AP) — Police are investigating how a West Virginia first-grader obtained an unloaded gun that he brought onto a school bus.

Kanawha County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Brian Humphreys says another student overheard the boy talking about the gun during the bus' afternoon run on Tuesday. The student notified the bus driver, who contacted other authorities.

Humphreys says in a news release that the weapon was a single-shot .45-caliber pistol. He says the boy didn't threaten other students and no ammunition was found with the gun.

The boy is a first-grade student at Middle Trail Elementary in Diamond.

The investigation is continuing. No charges have been filed.
