COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Lawyers for a teen accused of killing a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife during a burglary say he happened upon the scene after the newlyweds were killed.

Eighteen-year-old Macyo January is on trial this week in the slayings in Colorado Springs. He is charged as an adult with first-degree murder although he was 17 at the time Staff Sgt. David Dunlap and Whitney Butler were killed in January 2013.

Police say the newlywed couple's home security provider alerted them that their burglar alarm was activated, and they were killed after going home to check on it.

The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1sXCeQD ) that some witnesses initially identified a different person as the burglar, and public defenders have repeatedly questioned investigators about that.
