BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Two teens who admitted soliciting donations for nonexistent cancer patients in northwestern Ohio have been sentenced to jail and community service.
A judge told the boys who are students at Elmwood High School near Bowling Green that some of their community service time must be spent with a with a cancer-related charity.
Prosecutors say the 17-year-old and 15-year-old collected hundreds of dollars, but the pair said they kept only about $80.
Police say the two students visited homes in Hancock and Wood counties, asking for donations for a cancer-stricken student or teacher from their district. Authorities say there was no such person.
The 17-year-old was ordered on Monday to spend 20 days in a juvenile detention center while the younger boy was sentenced to eight days in the center.
