CAMP EDWARDS, Mass. (AP) — Military officials and local police are looking for three Afghan soldiers who went missing while taking part in a training exercise at a military base in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Officials say the three arrived at Camp Edwards Sept. 11, and were last seen at the Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis. They were reported missing Saturday night. Officials say the three Afghan soldiers are not a threat to the public. The Regional Cooperation training exercises have been held each year since 2004 and involve six different nations including the U.S.
CANADENSIS, Pa. (AP) — Authorities in Pennsylvania say they've recovered one of the weapons carried by a self-taught survivalist wanted in a deadly ambush shooting at a state police barracks. Police have been looking for Eric Frein (freen) since the Sept. 12 shooting in which one state trooper was killed and another was wounded at the barracks in the northeastern part of the state. Authorities say trackers have discovered items Frein either hid or abandoned in the woods, including an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Light rain and cooler temperatures are helping firefighters battle a huge wildfire in Northern California that's destroyed nearly three-dozen structures. Fire officials say in their initial count, 10 homes and 22 outbuildings were lost in the White Meadows area of Pollock Pines. The fast-moving blaze about 60 miles east of Sacramento started Sept. 13 and grew to more than 128 square miles despite periods of rain overnight. The fire's size held on Sunday, but more than 21,000 structures are still being threatened.
NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service is having preliminary discussions about setting up security screening checkpoints near public areas around the White House. A law enforcement official says such measures have been discussed previously, but take on added urgency following an incident Friday in which a man carrying a knife jumped over a gate around the White House and made it to a building entrance. The first family was away from the White House at the time.
BOSTON (AP) — Seven people are being treated for injuries after a boat caught fire at a dock in Boston. Fire officials say the 38-foot boat had just finished fueling at a dock in the city's Charlestown neighborhood when it burst into flames Sunday evening. One person was burned on both legs. All the injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
