HADLEY, N.Y. (AP) — A Columbia University medical student has died in a kayaking accident in upstate New York.
The Saratoga County sheriff's office says 24-year-old Jeffrey Tang was in a kayak on Stewart's Pond in Hadley on Saturday when he apparently fell into the water.
Witnesses saw him struggling before disappearing underwater.
Sheriff's deputies tell the Albany Times Union (http://bit.ly/1moxczC) that Tang was spending the weekend in the area with other medical students.
Deputies say other students tried to rescue Tang but he disappeared before anyone could reach him.
Crews from several police departments searched for Tang but were unsuccessful Saturday.
Tang's body was recovered Sunday.
Deputies say he was not wearing a life vest.
Tang grew up in Brooklyn and was a fencer at New York University before attending medical school.
