EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — The United Kingdom remains intact today after Scottish voters solidly rejected independence by a 55 percent to 45 percent margin. The decision prevented the rupture of a 307-year union with England, bringing a huge sigh of relief to Britain's political establishment, including Prime Minister David Cameron. He had faced calls for his resignation if Scotland had broken away.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has given final passage to a bill that not only authorizes the arming and training of moderate Syrian rebels fighting Islamic State militants but also eliminates any threat of a government shutdown before the November election by funding the government beyond Sept. 30. Even some of his fiercest Republican critics swung behind President Barack Obama's request, showing the alarm Islamic State militants have generated.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Terrorism experts are question the alleged Islamic State group plot to carry out random beheadings in Sydney, Australia. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Darkness and storms suspended the search for a missing Central Texas sheriff's deputy but efforts are to resume this morning after her empty patrol car was found swamped by floodwaters. The discovery came minutes after she radioed for help while checking flooded low-water crossings. The National Weather Service forecasts more heavy rain through Saturday over much of West Texas.
SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania State Police say that one-by-one, they are eliminating places that a suspected killer could hide after gunning down two troopers, killing one.
