ATLANTA (AP) — Gov. Nathan Deal says the state should add four industries to a program that gives technical college students grants if they plan to enter the high-demand fields.

Deal made the announcement at a campaign event on Thursday. He says technical college students studying computer programming, certified engineering, film or set design and precision manufacturing should be eligible for the awards in addition to the state's HOPE grants.

The additional awards run from $125 to $500. Deal says he's not sure how much adding the four areas will cost, but believes lottery revenue will cover the expense.

Democratic candidate Jason Carter says Deal is responsible for cuts to the HOPE grant program that affected technical college students and didn't act until his re-election was threatened.
