PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Fears about mold caused by recent monsoons have temporarily shut down an elementary school in Peoria.

Deer Valley Unified School District officials say independent organizations are testing the Terramar School for mold and air quality.

It's unclear when students may return.

The decision followed a lengthy meeting Monday with school officials and parents, many of whom became incensed by recurring storm-damage problems at the 11-year-old school.

Parent Teacher Association officials say recent rains seeped into many classrooms at the K-8 school, damaging teachers' belongings and teaching material and leaving behind gray mold and intense odor.

They say teachers and students have complained of headaches and nausea, which many blame on potential mold.

Of the 850 students at Terramar, 180 stayed home on Monday. The rest were taken to another school.
