FALLON, Nev. (AP) — Police are searching for burglars who broke into the home of a Churchill County sheriff's deputy and made off with his pistol, badge and police equipment. Fallon police say a police radio taken from the home has been recovered, but the deputy's department-issued pistol, badge and other equipment are missing. Fallon police will handle the investigation, even though the deputy's home is located outside the city.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Two northern Nevada fire chiefs have asked the Public Utilities Commission to investigate the safety of NV Energy's residential "smart" meters, saying they believe the meters are associated with a string of recent fires. Fire Chiefs Michael Hernandez of Reno and Tom Garrison of Sparks say four fires in Reno and five blazes in Sparks have been linked to smart meters since 2012. But investigators have been unable to conclusively determine what started the fires.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — A North Las Vegas high school student has been arrested in the shooting death of a 20-year-old woman. Police say the 16-year-old student at Mojave High School was arrested at school Thursday and booked into a juvenile detention facility. The boy is accused of fatally shooting Andrea Lafon on Sept. 5 in what police described as an argument over a marijuana sale. Police say Lafon was sitting in a car and attempting to sell marijuana when she got into an argument with the suspect and was shot once in the face.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Police are investigating the death of a bicyclist in North Las Vegas. Police say a car driven by a 55-year-old North Las Vegas woman struck the man on the bicycle at the intersection of Lake Mead Boulevard and North Fifth Street. Officers found the man dead on the roadway. Witnesses report the woman had a green light at the time of the Saturday morning accident.
