SALT LAKE CITY — At least six people were shot when someone opened fire at a Salt Lake City club Saturday night.

The shooting started just before midnight at the Inferno Cantina Night Club at 122 Pierpont Avenue, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Craig Gleason. By the time officers arrived, some of the victims had already driven to the hospital in their own cars.

“Most we found at the scene, but some had transported themselves to hospitals and we discovered them later in the night,” Gleason said.

Though some of the injuries were serious, none are believed to be life threatening. Police are investigating whether the shots were meant for specific people or if it was random fire.

“I have no idea how many people were in there, but it’s fair to say hundreds,” Gleason said. “When you imagine gunfire in that kind of space with that kind of people in it, it’s hard to say who was shot with intent and who was hit through random chance.”

Someone in the club at the time of the shootings caught the incident on video, but investigators weren’t able to view the footage immediately. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made.

“We have some suspects that we’re looking for, but as of yet we don’t have them in custody,” Gleason said.

The investigation is now in the hands of detectives. The shooting does not appear to be gang related, Gleason said.
