TAYLORSVILLE — A 24-year-old man was critically injured Saturday after being thrown from his sportbike when it crashed into a car at the intersection of 4500 South and Atherton Drive (1175 West). Witnesses told police the man ran a red light.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving calls about the accident just after 6 p.m., Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said.
Witnesses told police a Suzuki sportbike was headed west on 4500 South and collided with a Honda passenger vehicle. The Honda was attempting a left turn from Atherton Drive onto eastbound 4500 South when it was hit, Hoyal said.
"According to witnesses, the motorcyclist passed through a red light," Hoyal said. "Witnesses indicate he tried to avoid the accident but was unsuccessful."
The man on the sportbike was thrown 30 to 40 feet, landing on the road. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered head and leg injuries, Hoyal said.
“The motoryclist was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in extremely critical condition,” the lieutenant said. The driver of the Honda was not injured.
The Unified Police Department's crash analysis and reconstruction team spent several hours investigating the scene Saturday evening. The intersection was closed during that investigation but reopened around 9:30 p.m.
