BOSTON (AP) — Students in Boston's public schools will enjoy healthier, more locally sourced food and get a bigger say in planning menus under a new food service contract.
The $12.2 million-per-year, three-year contract with Whitsons Culinary Group was revealed Tuesday.
Whitsons, the incumbent, retained the contract by outbidding two other companies.
The Boston Globe (http://bit.ly/1BeaEpj ) reports that as part of the deal, the school system will also resume a pilot salad bar project at six schools. A previous salad bar option has been discontinued.
Students will take part in quarterly taste-tests to keep administrators informed of likes and dislikes.
Boston Public Schools says it serves approximately 11 million meals a year to more than 57,000 students.
