NORTH SALT LAKE — A driver lost control of his car and crashed, leaving I-215 at a standstill on Friday evening.

South Davis Fire Department tweeted there was a traffic accident with injuries and a car on fire on I-215 near Redwood Road at 8 p.m.

Witnesses told the Utah Highway Patrol that a Mitsubishi Eclipse was racing another car when it lost control. It bounced off one cement barrier and hit another barrier, causing the car to burst into flames.

The driver of the Eclipse was taken to the hospital complaining of shoulder pain. Police do not believe he was drunk or otherwise impaired.

The westbound on-ramp to I-215 from Redwood Road was closed while crews were at the scene putting out the fire.

South Davis Fire Department said I-215 was opened just after 8:30 p.m., but to use caution in the area.

Congestion in the area appeared to start clearing up by 8:45 p.m., though traffic was moving slowly.
