WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia has filed court documents in support of allowing the Corcoran Gallery of Art and its college to merge with two larger institutions.
D.C. Attorney General Irvin Nathan filed comments this week supporting the museum's merger with George Washington University and the National Gallery of Art. The attorney general is charged with representing the public interest when a court considers major changes to a charity's structure.
A hearing will be held Friday on the proposed Corcoran merger in D.C. Superior Court.
A group representing some students, alumni, donors and faculty have filed a lawsuit to stop the merger. They accuse the Corcoran's trustees of financial mismanagement.
The Corcoran's agreement would allow it to continue operating as a museum. Its college would become part of GW.
