HOUSTON (AP) — Houston city officials will review how wildlife that can threaten aircraft safety are controlled at airports after the poisoning deaths of hundreds of birds.
Mayor Annise Parker said Thursday that the Houston Airport System is aware of the sensitive nature of the topic and wants to move forward in a respectful manner.
KHOU-TV (http://bit.ly/1phspMJ ) this week aired video of poisoned birds dying at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
United Airlines defended the poisoning but later said it did not tell its contractor how to control the birds. The carrier will now help explore alternatives to poison. Airport officials have said the work was within federal wildlife guidelines.
Some experts suggest netting, taking away food sources or using technology against birds that cause sanitation problems and can damage or bring down planes.
