ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The head of the St. Paul teachers union will step down after being elected to a national union leadership role.
The Star Tribune reports (http://strib.mn/1kqOjKF ) St. Paul union president Mary Cathryn Ricker was named executive vice president of the American Federation of Teachers on Monday. Ricker will be replaced in St. Paul by union vice president Denise Rodriguez.
Ricker has led the St. Paul union since 2005. She helped negotiate a new two-year contract with the St. Paul School District earlier this year. The deal was reached just days before teachers were set to take a strike-authorization vote.
St. Paul is Minnesota's second-largest district with nearly 38,000 students and about 3,200 teachers.
