(KSL News) A Taylorsville man accused of killing a man with a knife and a meat cleaver may plead out his case to avoid the death penalty.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports 28-year-old David Berry waived his right to a preliminary hearing to think about a plea deal. On the table: 20 years to life in prison. In exchange, prosecutors would not go after the death penalty.
Charging documents state Berry walked up to Isidro Cano and his daughter-in-law last August. He reportedly said, "Ma'am I want to kill someone today," then stabbed Cano 21 times.
Berry is scheduled to appear in court for a scheduling hearing April 29.
