WEST VALLEY CITY — Shots were fired by two alleged shoplifters in a Kmart when employees tried to stop two men from leaving the store, police said.

At about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, loss prevention employees at the Kmart located at 1770 West 4100 South attempted to stop two men from shoplifting as they were leaving the store, said Roxeanne Vianuku of the West Valley City Police Department.

After the employees approached the pair, both men produced handguns and fired two to three shots into the ceiling, Vianuku said. The men ran from the store and got into a silver or grey Toyota Camry or Corolla with a “white license plate.”

One of the men fired another shot as they left the parking lot going westbound on 4100 South, Vianuku said.

The men were both described as Hispanic males between the ages of 25 and 35, both of medium height and build. One man was wearing a grey shirt and jeans and the other was wearing a blue shirt and jeans.

As of Friday at 9 p.m., Detectives were still gathering information, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance video.

If anyone has information about the identity or whereabouts of the men, they can call West Valley police at 801-840-4000.
