CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A task force of Nevada lawmakers, educators and parents has recommended the state provide schools with at least 150 percent of the normal per-student funding rate to educate low-income and English language learner students. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the recommendation will be turned into a bill for consideration in the 2015 legislative session.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles says almost 49,000 Nevada residents have taken the written test since January to obtain a driver authorization card. The cards are available to international immigrants who aren't eligible for a regular driver's license, and to people transferring driver privilege cards from other states. Some state officials think as many as 60,000 people could be eligible to apply for the Nevada cards.
SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Sparks police have identified the victim of what they believe to be an accidental drowning at a residential swimming pool. Police found 31-year-old Kristen Denler unresponsive in the pool on Sunday. Her death remains under investigation but officers say it is considered an accident. They also say alcohol may have been a factor in the death.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials have issued an excessive heat warning for the Las Vegas area today and tomorrow as triple-digit temperatures are expected to bake the region. The National Weather Service says the Las Vegas valley will be sizzling between 108 and 114 degrees this week. Forecasters say the prolonged heat spell and warm lows overnight will cause heat to build up to dangerous levels.
